Keep Your Dresser Safe During Your Move to Calgary

 

Moving to Calgary? Find out how to properly prepare your dresser for transport to prevent damage. Methods include disassembly, padding, and securing parts.

As a long-time Calgary resident who has moved several times, I've learned a few key tricks for keeping dressers and other furniture safe during a move. 

My last big move was particularly rough - the movers from my moving and storage Calgary company were nice, but in a rush.

My beautiful antique dresser suffered some scrapes and a broken leg as a result. I wish I had taken more time to prepare it!

Be Thorough In Disassembling Your Dresser

If possible, fully disassemble your dresser before moving day. Removing the legs, detaching the mirror, taking out the drawers, and more will make it lighter and less vulnerable to damage. 

Pay attention while taking it apart - take photos and label hardware and parts so you can easily reassemble later. Place all nuts, bolts, brackets, etc in marked bags or containers so they don't get lost. 

Consider using a furniture dolly for moving large disassembled sections. My six-drawer oak dresser was a pain to take apart, but doing so prevented worse scratches and dings later.

Pad and Secure All Drawers and Parts

After disassembly, thoroughly pad all parts of the dresser with blankets or other thick, soft material. 

Pay special attention to padding sharp corners and edges to prevent scrapes and punctures. I like to use old blankets and towels - just make sure they're clean!

For parts like drawers, doors, and the dresser back, use stretch wrap to secure the padding tightly in place. 

Wrapping drawers individually in furniture pads or moving blankets prevents the contents from shifting and damaging the dresser during transit.

Use strong tape to keep all disassembled sections together. Taping wooden parts together also reduces the chance of nicks, cracks, and lost hardware. My dresser's broken leg could have been prevented with stronger binding.

Invest In Furniture Moving Boxes

For smaller dressers and side tables, specialty moving boxes make transport safer and easier. Models with adjustable foam padding secure furniture tightly and minimize movement inside the box.

I invested in a set of wardrobe moving boxes for my bedside tables and was amazed at how well they prevented scratches and dings that happened to my dresser.

Although pricier than regular boxes, their protective qualities saved me money and headaches in damaged furniture repairs later. Always securely seal and label all moving boxes containing dresser parts and hardware. 

Haphazard boxes cause parts and tools to spill everywhere when unloaded. Trust me, trying to figure out which hardware and parts go to which furniture piece is frustrating!

Handle With Care During Loading and Transport

When moving day arrives, frequently remind movers which boxes and items need delicate handling - especially for a partially disassembled antique dresser. Moving crews work on tight schedules, so they appreciate friendly customers who provide clear instructions upfront.

Although you may want to save money by fully disassembling furniture, consider paying movers to take apart or reassemble tricky antique or delicate dressers.

Their experience allows them to safely manipulate furniture - saving you effort and preventing damage.

I helped wrap my heirloom dresser, then paid just $50 extra for the movers' expertise in disassembling and reassembling it.
