Keep Your Table Safe: A Step-by-Step Guide to Wrapping Furniture for Moving

Moving can be stressful enough without worrying about your cherished dining room table arriving at your new home with dings, scratches, or - gasp - a broken leg. 

Choosing one of the best long-distance moving companies in Canada is important, but you also need to take steps to keep your table safe during the journey.

Properly wrapping your table in moving blankets and securing all components is crucial, but the process can seem daunting if you've never done it before. 

As a long-time mover and moving company manager, I've wrapped hundreds of tables and developed a system to make sure they arrive in perfect condition every time.

Here is my tried and true, step-by-step guide to wrapping a dining room table for moving, complete with pro tips and tricks I've learned over the years. 

With the right materials and techniques, you can pack and transport your table across the country without damage.

What You'll Need:

• Moving blankets (3-4)
• Furniture pads (2-3)
• Box sealing tape
• Packaging tape
• Furniture straps or strong rope

Step 1: Clear Off the Table

First things first - clear everything off the table top. Removing tablecloths, centerpieces, placemats and other items will give you a clean surface to work with and eliminate potential shifting or scratching from debris underneath blankets and pads.

This is also the time to carefully disassemble any extensions, leafs or inserts so you can wrap the main table surface separately if needed.

Step 2: Protect the Table Top

With the table surface cleared, lay a furniture pad in the center, smoothing it out to avoid folds or wrinkles. Furniture pads add an extra layer of cushioning to prevent surface scratches or dents.

Place a moving blanket over the top, letting it drape evenly on all sides. Pro tip: tuck any overhanging edges of the blanket neatly underneath to secure it. Use packaging tape to tape down the underside edges so the pad and blanket stay fixed in place if shifted.

Step 3: Wrap the Legs

Maneuver the table on its side to expose the legs and aprons underneath. This part often requires two people and extreme care not to inadvertently damage the legs.

Place a furniture pad beneath each leg, covering the entire surface area that will contact the truck or floor. Tape pads firmly in place then tightly wrap each leg in a moving blanket secured with packaging tape so the pads won't slip off.

Pro mover tip: use box sealing tape here which is thicker and sticks to textured surfaces better than normal tape.

Step 4: Pad the Chairs

Don't forget to protect the dining chairs! Use furniture pads, moving blankets and tape to securely wrap the chairs in the same fashion as you did the table legs. Pay special attention to chair legs, backs, armrests and any decorative elements prone to snapping, scratching or denting.

Step 5 (Optional): Secure Parts Together

For extra stability and protection, bundle individual chairs to each other and the table base using furniture straps or strong rope so nothing shifts separately in transit. Just don't cinch ties so tightly that they damage the finish!

Step 6: Load with Care

Carefully load your padded, bundled table onto the moving truck wedged tightly so it doesn't tip but isn't bear weight from other furniture pressed against it.

Transport it this way across the country - or just across town - and you can breathe easy knowing your table will arrive safe and intact, ready to create memories around for years to come in your new home!
